Historia

Con el descubrimiento de restos fósiles en las Cuevas de Piquimachay y en los alrededores del pueblo de Paccaicasa, se ha demostrado que el hombre primitivo se estableció en Ayacucho hace más de 20,000 años. Los cronistas señalan a los Pocras como la nación más importante que existió en Huamanga desde tiempos antiguos. La Cultura Wari se desarrolló en la provincia de Huanta, hasta que fueron asimilados por la expansión de los Incas. El Inca Wiracocha conquistó la región, encontrando una oposición obstinada por parte de las tribus locales. En algunas recopilaciones históricas se afirma que ocurrió una rebelión contra la autoridad incaica, que fue aplacada por los Incas con gigantescas matanzas. Fue tal la mortandad que causaron los combates que estos hechos dieron lugar al nombre de Ayacucho, que en quechua significa "Rincón de Muertos". Los españoles encontraron pueblos muy organizados y laboriosos, con un alto sentido del trabajo colectivo. Atraídos por la tranquilidad de la región, muchos soldados se fueron estableciendo en esta zona hasta que Alonso de Alvarado y Francisco de Cárdenas buscaron por mandato de Pizarro el lugar adecuado para fundar una ciudad intermedia entre Lima y Cuzco, fundándose así la Ciudad de Ayacucho en el año 1,539. En 1,677 se fundó la Universidad de San Critóbal de Huamanga (Epoca Virreynal). En esta ciudad nació y se destacó la heroína María Parado de Bellido, quien participó en la lucha por la independencia. En la Batalla de Ayacucho (9 de Diciembre de 1824) se consolidó la Independencia del Perú y América. Uno de los ayacuchanos más destacados es Andrés Avelino Cáceres, héroe de la Guerra con Chile y Presidente de la República en 1886 y 1894.

La Ciudad de Ayacucho es llamada la Ciudad de las Iglesias, ya que en ella se pueden encontrar más de 40, todas de origen colonial. Cerca a la ciudad, se encuentra la Pampa de la Quinua, escenario de la Batalla de Ayacucho entre españoles y patriotas. En las cavernas de Piquimachay y Pacaicassa se han encontrado las herramientas de piedra más antiguas del Perú (20 mil años). En Ayacucho, se ubicó el centro de la Cultura Wari. Vilcashuamán, situada a 120 kms al sur de Ayacucho, fue un centro administrativo incaico, entre sus construcciones se encuentran el Templo del Sol y de la Luna. Intiwatana, a pocos kilómetros de Vilcashuamán, es un complejo arqueológico que consta de un palacio, un torreón, baños del Inca (con una piedra de 17 ángulos) y una laguna artificial frente al complejo arqueológico. En Ayacucho se encuentra la Reserva Nacional de Pampa Galeras, destinada a proteger a la vicuña, el más pequeño y grácil de los camélidos sudamericanos. Este departamento posee además bosques naturales en donde abundan la mayor cantidad de Puyas de Raimondi, ubicados dentro del Santuario Nacional de Titancayocc.
